The District 202 Evanston Township High School Board of Education voted unanimously to extend the contract of the school’s superintendent, Marcus Campbell, for five years at their Wednesday morning meeting at the high school.

“The extension spans from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2029, and includes a percentage salary increase,” said board President Pat Savage-Williams.

Campbell started his position at the school in July 2022, and received a base salary of $275,000 in the 2022-23 school year, according to the school’s compensation report

“We commend Dr. Campbell for his outstanding leadership, dedication to student well-being and commitment to systemic improvements,” Savage-Williams said.

“His ability to unify our educators and staff to take action around our strategic priorities has been instrumental in our progress as an institution. We are fortunate to have Dr. Campbell at the helm as we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible for our students and our community.”

Savage-Williams’ comments were met with applause from the board.

State rules for contracts

Under the State of Illinois’ school code, superintendents can only be employed with multiyear contracts up to five years if the contracts are performance-based and linked to student academic achievement and improvement.

According to the school code, “No performance-based contract shall be extended or rolled-over prior to its scheduled expiration unless all the performance and improvement goals contained in the contract have been met.”

The Board of Education determines these goals and indicators to measure the goals and effectiveness of the superintendent.

In voting to renew Campbell’s contract, the board also unanimously found that Campbell “has met the goals and indicators of student performance and academic improvement in the superintendent’s July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2025, performance based superintendent contract.”

The RoundTable has filed a FOIA request with the district to obtain the superintendent’s new contract and report on the board’s measurements of his performance.
