The National Merit Scholarship Corporation named 15 finalists from Evanston Township High School in the National Merit Scholarship Program this week. That’s a strong jump up from last year’s six finalists.
The finalists at ETHS are Hershel Abraham, Una Breen, Eli Coustan, Cameron Eaton-Strong, Maxwell Matsis, Daniel O’Connor, Isaac Peng, Katherine Schober, Leah Shaman, Harrison Stracks, Patrick Tu, Philippa Walker, Andrew Watson, William Zalmeza, and Kathryn Zehr.
Students enter the scholarship program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Once named semifinalists, they must apply to receive the finalist status. Roughly 15,000 of the 16,000 semifinalists receive this status.
Every year, the National Merit Scholarship Company recognizes U.S. high school students who demonstrate definitive marks of academic excellence.
This year, roughly 15,000 students were named finalists.
Later this spring, 6,870 — about half of these students will be notified if they are Merit Scholarship winners.
