“We are here today to support our students by supporting public education,” said Rick Cardis, head of the teachers’ union at Evanston Township High School. He led a rally attended by more than 100 at the high school to protest what the ETHS Teachers’ Council calls “the harmful, anti-public education policies” of the Trump administration, which includes plans to dismantle the Department of Education, reduce federal funds for public schools and increase funding for private schools. The high school district could lose nearly $5 million annually — mostly for programs supporting low-income students and students with disabilities — if federal money is cut, according to the council.
