The University Guild will be hosting three events in the upcoming months. All programs will take place on Northwestern campus’ Scott Hall in the Guild Lounge, 601 University Place. All programs will begin at 1:30 p.m.
The University Guild’s Annual Membership is $50. Guests are welcome for $7 per person/per program. Membership is open to all in the community. The purpose of the University Guild is to bring to the membership of the Guild the intellectual resources of the university, to promote the interests of the university, to work for the collection and exhibition of the objects of art, and to advance the development and appreciation of the fine arts in the university and in Evanston. The University Guild also gives scholarships to students at Northwestern University.
The first program, “How to Lose (and find) A 500-Pound Vase,” will take place on March 3. It will be lead by Kay Burlingham, Guild Board and Art Collection Manager, and Madeline Crispell, Guild Curator. The largest vase ever made by Doulton — which stands six-feet tall and weighs 500 pounds — was one of the first purchases of the University Guild Art Committee. The determined ladies of the committee visited the Columbian Exposition more than twenty times to shrewdly negotiate their final purchase price with the Doulton representative at the close of the fair. So, what caused the vase to then disappear from Scott Hall for over forty years, and where was it found hiding?
Following the University Guild’s annual meeting on April 7, there will be a musical performance by harpist Joy Yu Hoffman. Hoffman will play her Kong Hou Chinese double strung harp. She will introduce the harp and a brief history of this instrument. Hoffman will play Chinese folk music, Irish folk music and jazz. Hoffman has a masters degree from Northwestern University.
On May 5, join Crispell and Burlingham for a Tea and Tour celebrating the end of the current temporary exhibition “Treasures from the Collection: Asian Art at the University Guild.” The exhibition features a wide range of Asian art and artifacts from the University Guild’s entire history of collecting, featuring objects that have been off view for years. Enjoy light refreshments, a talk on the exhibition, and the last tour of the galleries before the “Treasures from the Collection” closes. This is a special program to end the University Guild season.
