Sarah Schulman, a professor in the English Department at Northwestern University, speaks Wednesday at a faculty protest at The Rock against the university’s limits on demonstrations.
A leaflet distributed at the protest noted the protest began at 1 p.m., “explicitly violating the University’s demonstration policy by conducting ‘public speech or other expressive activity’ at the Rock before 3pm.”
The leaflet said demonstrators were “a loosely organized group of tenured faculty who feel strongly about freedom of expression and due process.”
From the leaflet: “We insist that Northwestern not become a campus where students, staff, and faculty are afraid to speak at a time when speaking up for our values is of the utmost importance. We object to the chilling of speech at Northwestern, whether about Gaza or other topics of concern.”
