A teenager has been charged in relation to the stabbing of two ETHS students early this month at the intersection of Church Street and Dodge Avenue.

According to Evanston police, the boy stabbed two other teens — neither of whom suffered serious injuries — with a pocketknife during an altercation around 3:45 p.m on Nov. 7.

The alleged offender, a 16-year-old, has been charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon (non-firearm).

Evanston police reported in a newsletter that police recovered the knife in question and bloody clothing from the home of the boy who was arrested.

Evanston Cmdr. Ryan Glew said that the incident was not random and that the involved parties knew each other.

“I don’t think there’s any additional safety concerns,” he said.

The altercation reportedly happened shortly after the three boys were dismissed for the day from the high school.

According to Glew, the stabbing occurred on property owned by ETHS, but not the school’s campus. The three teenagers reportedly stepped “just into the grass off the sidewalk” at the corner closest to high school.

“The alleged incident did not occur on school grounds,” ETHS Communications Director Reine Hanna said. “Should any situation arise that impacts the safety of our students or staff, we address it appropriately and communicate relevant information directly to our school community through official channels as needed.”

It’s unknown if the offender had the pocketknife with him during the school day.

Students in District 202 are prohibited from “using, possessing, controlling, or transferring a weapon” with a punishment of expulsion for at least one year if found to have brought a weapon to school or school events, according to District 202 Board of Education policy.
