Below is a message from Northwestern University’s Community Relations team, emphasizing the university’s dedication to building strong, positive relationships between its students and the Evanston community as the new academic year begins:

To Our Evanston Neighbors,

As we welcome the start of the 2024-2025 school year, Northwestern University remains committed to strengthening the relationship between our students and the Evanston community. We understand that students living off-campus can sometimes create challenges for neighbors, such as noise and property upkeep concerns. We take these issues seriously and have strengthened our efforts to help students understand the importance of being respectful and responsible students. As much as Northwestern is a place of academic pursuit, it also holds the responsibility of forming students into conscientious citizens. We expect our students to not only excel academically but also to be great neighbors. To this end, we remind students that in joining the Evanston community, they are joining a community of families, professionals and non-student neighbors who may have priorities and lifestyles that differ from their own.

We encourage our students to be good neighbors by introducing themselves, learning about the priorities and needs of those around them and sharing their own as well. We also encourage students to solve problems proactively by keeping neighbor communication lines open, observing Evanston noise (and all other!) ordinances and engaging in appropriate property upkeep. Our “Being a Good Neighbor” brochure outlines these expectations.

Our hope is that you continue to welcome and embrace our students as they become and continue to be your neighbors. The mutual respect, understanding and camaraderie between the residents and our student body is an example of the strength of our community.

There will be an ice cream social, which will serve as a great opportunity to interact, engage and meet our students … your neighbors. It will be hosted by Northwestern from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Firefighter’s Park, 2040 Maple Ave. In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled to Oct. 3. Notification of any change will be posted to Facebook.

We look forward to seeing you at this event and working together to make our neighborhood a better place for everyone. Should you have any questions, concerns or uplifting experiences to share, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,
