Hundreds of students and parents gathered, along with school and city officials, on Thursday evening for the annual Kits, Cats and Kids Block Party at Evanston Township High School’s Lazier Field.
Featured speakers from both elementary and high school districts and the city took the stage to wish all students and families well in the new school year.
Evanston/Skokie School District 65 kicked off the evening’s speakers with words from Katie Speth, assistant superintendent of instructional leadership. She spoke in place of Superintendent Angel Turner, who was attending an event that evening for her own son’s school.
Evanston Township High School District 202’s Superintendent Marcus Campbell followed, stating it was an honor to host the community event at their school.

“We’ve got room for everyone here,” Campbell said.
Second Ward City Council Member Krissie Harris and Mayor Daniel Biss spoke on behalf of the city. Harris wished the students well and Biss commented on how much he loves seeing different parts of the city working together.
Dave Davis, Northwestern University’s executive director of neighborhood and community relations, closed the speaker portion of the evening.
“This event is a testament to the strength of our partnership” between the high school, Northwestern University, the City of Evanston and District 65, he said.
The field accommodated a corner of bounce houses and amenities for kids, free food, community partner tables and food trucks for attendees to enjoy.
Evanston Township High School’s marching band also performed alongside Northwestern University’s, bringing joint musical entertainment to the evening.
